 Horse meat
I was in a discussion with a friend from the UK and decided to do some 'research' online. I found this on wikipedia relating to the US attitude: | | | | Quote: Sale and consumption of horse meat is illegal in California and Illinois.[11] Horse meat supplied by three abattoirs in the U.S. was sold to zoos to feed their carnivores, and was exported to Europe and Japan for human consumption. In 2007 two horse meat abattoirs in Texas were ordered closed. Later that year, an abattoir in Illinois, reported to be the last horse meat abattoir in the U.S., was closed.[11]
There is an effort in the United States to create a law, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, designed to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption.[12] On September 8, 2006, the House of Representatives passed a bill which, had it also passed the Senate and been signed by the President, would have made killing horses for human consumption an illegal practice in the United States.[13]
Most people in the US are not aware that horses are slaughtered there for human consumption in other countries. According to some of these polls, in New York, 64% of people polled believed that slaughtering horses for meat was illegal, while in Indiana, 91% believe that horse slaughter should be banned.[14] In Texas 89% of voters are unaware that horse slaughter was then going on in their own state.[15]
Prior to 2007, three major equine slaughterhouses operated in the United States: Dallas Crown, Inc. in Kaufman, Texas; Beltex Corporation in Fort Worth, Texas; and Cavel International, Inc. in DeKalb, Illinois. All with Belgian ownership [LOL], although Multimeat NW has also been listed as French and Dutch owned. Velda NV owns Cavel, Multimeat NV owns Beltex and Chevideco owns Dallas Crown.
The slaughterhouses exported approximately 42 million dollars worth of horse meat per year. Since the human consumption of horse meat is generally considered unacceptable by the majority of the United States populace[citation needed] (see Taboo food and drink) and is illegal in several states, most of the horses slaughtered for this purpose in the United States were exported to other countries, such as France, Belgium and Japan, where the meat is considered a delicacy.[16] As prominently stated on their website, Dallas Crown “provides Carnivore Diet for zoos and wildlife centers across the United States”.[17] | | | | |
Why is it a taboo, actually? I mean...it's just an animal like any other. I'd eat any sort of meat as long as it wasn't illegally obtained (race nearing extinction etc). And how is it in the UK, Italy or Estonia? Is horse meat considered taboo there or is it on the menu?

 Re: Horse meat
I know it used to be illegal to sell horse meat in a normal butcher shop in the Netherlands, so there were separate horse meat butcher stores (I'm talking about 60 years ago or so). Anyway, I thought horse meat was pretty tough meat, and considered low-class.

 Re: Horse meat
LIAR!! Actually though, it can be just as tough/tender as you like depending on which part of the horse you're eating. I've eaten very stringy but also blissfully tender horse meat. It usually just depends on how much you spend on it, in my experience. I always found it tasted a lot like kangaroo meat actually.

 Re: Horse meat
There's a stigma in the US that horses are cute and loving and friendly and whatnot, like cats and dogs. Thus eating horse meat is like eating a family pet. At least, that's my guess.
Personally, I'd eat any kind of meat, including horse, but I enjoy eating strange animals.

 Re: Horse meat
Got horsemeat in my fridge, i think i draw the line at eating human flesh though (unless i get stranded in the Andes after a plane crash obviously).
Btw if you go to a butcher and compare prices, horsemeat won't fall in the "low-budget" area. If it would you would probably end up with the tough meat indeed.

 Re: Horse meat
I'd eat human meat, just not brain. No jacked up neurological problems for me, thanks. At least, not any more than I already have.
Anyone up for a palm sandwich?

 Re: Horse meat
Eating your own species is generally not a good idea. Studies have linked it with Prion deceases like Mad Cow Decease and Creutzfeldt Jakob.

 Re: Horse meat
In Italy it's pretty openly eaten. Very delicious too. Definitely not cheap or tough. I've tried it on pizza and a creamy pasta.
In the UK i think you can get it, but it's probably rare. Like most culinary dishes, the UK is probably just ignorant of it.
And yeah, I suspect the simple minded folks in the US probably banned it because it's not an animal commonly associate with domestication for the purpose of eating.

 Re: Horse meat
I thought the prion diseases were mostly caused by eating of brain tissue, hence my aversion for brain. However, the Wikipedia article doesn't mention that, so perhaps I should stay away from menschen fleisch after all. Ah well. What if I limit my diet to asian teenaged girls?

 Re: Horse meat
Cannibal snuff movies? Right...? I wish I could eat dolphin or whale. I mean, I know I CAN in some countries, it's just pretty fucked given how they're not doing particularly well in terms of demographics. The only moral stopping me from eating this or that animal is basically that they should be nearing extinction.

 Re: Horse meat
I went through about 4 pages of that thread. Cuties. Many with ridiculous fake boobs. But hey, boobs aren't edible anyway.
