well, it'd be neat if he could extrapolate that into 3d. Then this algorithm could be used to created 3d models of objects that are genetically optimized... ie, instead of a 3,000 polygon model for a game, you give the super-high polygon version to this program and it figures out the best way to display it in 1000 polygons. Better than doing it by hand.
Anyway, as it is, yea, little use in the real world, but some extrapolation could make it really handy.
