Basically it's like Xbox Live for PS with avatars and shops you can walk around in and games you can play. Penny Arcade already made a comic about the curious behavior on there, but this article raises the point about how female gamers are usually treated in these environments, by the ZOMGIT'SAGURL kiddies. ![]() I wonder why the difference between the european and US players is so big, tho. Maybe because consoles are cheaper in the US so more lowlifes and kiddies play it? Or maybe because of the schizophrenic attitutde to sex and all its properties in the maintream US media? God knows. http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/ ... more-15013 [quote]As you may have seen on Friday before the incriminating video was removed, there’s some pretty dodgy people out there on PlayStation Home. The thing is, it goes down a lot deeper than the unfortunate incident that YouTube’s flagging ninjas got hold of last week. So much deeper, that I’ve even coined a term for it. And filed a patent. Alright, maybe not the last one. I think the US Patent Office might just reject a “patent describing the psychological behavior of male individuals around females on PlayStation-based 3D chat environments†|

Scary. To all female gamers hang in there, its bound to get better somewhere within a couple of centuries. |

I don't think it's fair to single out America for this. I ascribe herd mentality... America had the first single individual to do avatar-humping and the herd automatically formed. Now it's considered 'ok' to do in some twisted teeny-bopper facebook txting avatar raping way. I'm sure Europe will follow. I'm afraid to see what the Asian version is. They probably Bukaki. |

lol. Bukkake FTW! I didn't post the article because of the Euro-US discrepancy thing, but I do think that the contrast the article writer talks about is intruiging. Regardless of the reason. ![]() I meant it more as a means of starting the whole discussion of how female gamers (or at least, gamers with female avatars) are being treated by a good part of their male counterparts in online communities and MMORPG's. Boys pursuing/harassing girls isn't anything new, obviously, but the anonymity of the internet has taken away a lot of boundaries. If a guy starts to talk to a girl at a bar and she blows him off, that's (usually) fair game. But in an MMORPG, you'll often see a huge rant of abuse directed towards the female gamer following such a situation. Irl, such a thing would be considered at the very least lame, at worst dangerously psychotic. Know what i mean? The treshold for being a complete and utter loser is virtually gone online, with your virtual anonymity and fancy avatar. I even know a few guys who have an as-seductive-as-possible female avatar in MMORPG's, for one reason: to lure in the losers and make them spend cash on 'her'. Gifts, items, gold...you'd be surprised at how much they haul in by pretending to be a flirty female online. ![]() |

Yeah here we go, just coz it's new, suddenly so is sexism online ![]() Then you get the female chars who are all /kiss and /flirt and everyone assumes they're a female and of course starts all the /kiss and /flirt back, or even the OMG here take all my gold!!!11!1!11! Or on Xbox Live over voice chat, if you're a guy you get called gay and if you're a girl you're just talking over the mic while your brother plays the game. But can we please go into a private chat with you? Pretty please? I do have to say that very few people I know actually have these problems, but they do exist. Again, maybe that's because of the EU/US divide that the article mentions (not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing with it there) It's like everything. You go in a club as a guy, you mostly get ignored. Go in as a girl in a short skirt, you're gonna get swamped. But because clubs have been around for so long, it's 'acceptable'. And because Home is new, it's not. |

oh, so you don't think female avatars getting dry-humped in Playstation Home is a problem? I'm curious, actually... if it were me getting pixel-bopped I'd probably get offended. But I'm guessing women are maybe more thick-skinned about it than guys. BTW, I play female avatars on MMOs and such. Guys hitting on me makes be lol. It's hilarious. Especially if Shiny and I perform lesbian acts. ![]() BTW, leave it to Ox to correct my spelling of Bukkake. ![]() |

Haha, do you know I actually considered taking over your spelling (which I knew was incorrect) to avoid any comments on how I know these things? ![]() ![]() I'd think women would be more irked, too. Hell I have (single) female friends who are pretty generally pissed off at men for checking them out. Not even in an offensive way, just...the stuff men do pretty much automatically (sneeking in peeks at girls etc, you know the drill). And no, she's not a bitter ugly bitch. ![]() So I can't imagine constant come-ons, innuendo and dry-humping online being any less irritating. Even if the girls (or boys playing as girls) choose to be flirty and girly or whatever. Pev, didn't you have that semi-stalking psycho kid on GW a long time ago? Something something tank? I can't imagine you did anything to piss him off so bad that it'd make him want to badger/threaten you until the end of times if you didn't block him. I think I'm quite regularly an ass online, but nobody cares other than the normal "stfu u stoopid n00b!!!11!87" right off the bat. I certainly won't get stalked by some kid for it. I do think women are targeted more by these assholes than men. lol @ Satis' lesbian adventures. If I didn't know you better/play GW with you I'd have serious questions about your female avatar fetish. ![]() |

Big Huge Tank, yeah, twat. And actually yes, I hate guys checking me out, hell just ask Steve, even him checking me out bugs me ![]() It happens everywhere, not to the extent of dry humping of course but it's all annoying regardless, and at least online you can usually block/ignore/report them, and it's not really affecting you. Aint like they can actually come round and pester you, you can just log off or go into a game to get away from it. It is of course different if they decide to stalk you, like Big Huge Tank did with me, but that's again the same in real life. You go out to a club, guy keeps trying to dance with you, you say fuck off, he goes. Other guy keeps trying it, you say fuck off, he follows you around everywhere for the next month... Even he didn't piss me off too much, despite saying he'd kill steve and rape me coz... well he had no clue where I was, what I or Steve looked like and I just ignored and reported him. He couldn't ever contact me again anyway. But as I say, it rarely happens to me, in real life or online ![]() |

yea, the clueless level of some people makes me cringe. I blame indiscriminate breeding and a lack of survival of the fittest. :p Anyway, thanks for the explanation. Y'know... when guys bug Shiny I get pretty pissed. I'm always ready to take off someone's head if I need to. It's just sad that it has to come to that. |

Another article on PS Home, from a different source (a countdown of 2008 disappointments)...from the sound of it it really is an unbearable place. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20 ... -2008.html

I don't get it...get a couple shifts of moderators wielding ban sticks and they could change the situation in a week. It won't fix the OTHER issues, but sheesh. |

This is what happens when you panic because your console is losing the war. Instead of taking tried and tested things and making it easy and useful, you try to 'innovate' and screw it up. Xbox Live. Simple and easy. Someone is annoying you? You can mute them, report them, block communications. All as simple as selecting their name and clicking mute/report/block. You want to travel around with your friends between games? Create a party and wherever the leader goes, the others follow. No moderation, no effort on M$'s part whatsoever (which pretty much sums up just how they like their products... ![]() Still, just sounds like any gaming forum or lobby. Read the WoW forums, they're as bad (but moderated), or go wait in the main lobby for Diablo 2 instead of actually going into a game. People just hang out there and insult others. Guess it's warmer than hanging out in the middle of town to insult others, and you can't get punched in the face for it. |
