Post Genetic Progamming and the Mona Lisa
This is pretty neat. This guy wrote a program that used 'genetic' programming to approximate the Mona Lisa.
Quote:
0) Setup a random DNA string (application start)
1) Copy the current DNA sequence and mutate it slightly
2) Use the new DNA to render polygons onto a canvas
3) Compare the canvas to the source image
4) If the new painting looks more like the source image than the previous painting did, then overwrite the current DNA with the new DNA
5) repeat from 1

Pics and more info at the link.

That's a pretty cool program right there!

well, it'd be neat if he could extrapolate that into 3d. Then this algorithm could be used to created 3d models of objects that are genetically optimized... ie, instead of a 3,000 polygon model for a game, you give the super-high polygon version to this program and it figures out the best way to display it in 1000 polygons. Better than doing it by hand. :)

Anyway, as it is, yea, little use in the real world, but some extrapolation could make it really handy.

Eh, I thought they'd try to reconstruct Mona Lisa's DNA. It seems like I was wrong. :)

But indeed only one polygon with enough vertices would give idea of her face. Add one more to the most priority (say by contrast) difference and you got the next interation. etc. Heh...
