Post subject:  LHC starts operating on the 10th of September
The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is the biggest particle accelerator ever built and (after much protest) will start working on Wednesday. They're trying to create conditions as they were right after the Big Bang, and more precisely they are hoping to find/see Higgs Bosons.

It's a pretty important experiment as it may prove/disprove some of the more theoritical and abstract parts of the current gospel of quantum theory (Standard Theory). But perhaps more importantly to us, it may produce some side-effects like the creation of black holes, strangelets, monopole magnets and other crazy shit.

Chances of that happening are fairly marginal, but in case it does let me say farewell to you guys already. I'll be out and about in Prague until wednesday (starting tomorrow) so probably won't be on the forums the coming few days. So...if the earth is swallowed by a black hole, was fun knowing you. :P hehehe


Additionally, I don't think they will find a Higgs Boson. I'm not quite a nuclear or quantum physicist, but Higgs Bosons would be too convenient. I mean, they are (theoritically) the missing links that answer a lot of the more bizzare questions that we see at subatomic levels, but that would just be too easy. Because truth is, we don't really know 80% of all the shit that goes on at the smallest levels. We have a lot of logical explanations, but a) they are purely theoritical and b) logic seems to be the last thing governing quantum theory. :roll:

lol...I've been following the news... I'm a bit of a physics junkie, cosmology and quantum types. Except for the math, I hate the math. Anyway, nothing bad's gonna happen, though strangely enough Lexx goes into the Earth destroying itself by using a particle accelerator to accidentally create some supermassive particle. Oh well, if it is the end of the world, there's not much we can do about it but enjoy the fireworks.

I was already joking around here on the count of that crap. Now seriously... imagine that some terrorists, or worse - fanatics, get possession over it. It is not 100% fail safe even when 'properly' used. Idiots have built that thing on the Earth! Pure yet well-educated idiotic chimps! They should've been jailed for a single try to legalize it. And for building it, they well-earned to be expelled from the solar system. Go mess somewhere else.

lol...is it true that most physicists consider quantum physics to be not quite 'real' or 'hard' physics J? From what I read, some even seemed to say that quantum physics belonged almost equally to the field of religion or philosophy as physics. Which is an exaggeration on their part, obviously, but imho not too far off. :) When I read (simplified) literatire on it I always feel like part of it is more of a thinking excercise than a real, tangible science.


I agree with Gfree to an extent though: if you're not sure what's going to happen, don't take too many liberties with experimenting. Don't want to open Pandora's Box and shit. I'm fairly certain we don't have too much to worry about, but what we know is really so little that the results could go many ways. :P

heh... the hard sciences always kicked my ass. Extremely interesting, but occasionally frustratingly difficult. Electronics, Chemistry, Physics and Calculus have all taken their turns beating the shit out of me.

I always failed math in school. Not so much because I couldn't do it though, it's just that it never captured my interest. The one year that they slapped me with a summer exam, I smoked it so hard that they never gave me one again (even though I never passed the years after that either). They quickly realized there wouldn't be a point...more work for them, and little or no return on my motivations. :roll:

Obviously, college level mathematics is another league. I seriously doubt my disinterest and lack of pure mathematical ability would have been sufficiently counterbalanced by my intelligence and arrogance. :P

I was voting for 6/6/06.... but I doubt the world will end at any special time. If the world ends, it'll be random. And it'll probably take a little while. What's the fun in the just snapping out of existence? You have to give people a few minutes/hours/days/weeks/years to be truly terrified.

That I remember certain theories doesn't mean I would bother to get into the stuff behind it FOR I'd probably consider it for BS (although it might not be). So... lets keep it clean and without drilling much into the matter. If there is a number of people agreeing about a thing, there's got to be something about it. :) Something.

nah, he need not be sadistic, just bored. Once you get bored in Morrowind or something, don't you occasionally try just murdering everyone you can find? I don't say it's a regular occurrence with me, but I've certainly done that in Morrowind, Oblivion, and many other games that allowed that choice.

If I were a god, and I created all this stuff in the first place, I don't imagine I'd have many qualms squishing it for my own amusement. I mean, sure, humans are sentient, but compared to the mind of a god we're probably like bacteria in our reasoning abilities. And it'd probably be fun to drop some bleach into a pool of bacteria and watch them scurry about trying not to die.
