Say, it falls off your hands and stops working. In the next seconds you will watch it and want to pick it up but imagine what would happen if it start working again exactly in the moment when your eye is on the cross, before you even had a chance of touching it. There are possibly more less probable cases but they still may happen if you don't use EXTREME caution (which is unlikely for 99% of people). Fuck such natural selection.

I don't consider it natural selection unless it burns off your reproductive organs.

As far as blinding, I don't know if it'll blind you unless your retina focuses it. If it's just an off chance hit it may not cause permanent damage. But who knows. Just be aware that it's potentially dangerous and don't go around blinding the neighbor's kids.
