...you can now buy a petabyte drive system!

http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/30/emc- ... yte-array/

For the uninitiated....

8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1000 kilobytes (roughly) = 1 megabyte
1000 megabytes (roughly) = 1 gigabyte
1000 gigabytes (roughly) = 1 terabyte
1000 terabytes (roughly) = 1 petabyte

:D

Today, a 500GB drive costs us consumers about about $373. Lets assume EMC made a bulk purchase @ $300 each. That means the drives cost them $720k for each petabyte array. Lets say one half of the $4m price tag is just pricing and the rest R&D:

- $720k for the HD's
- $2m profit margin
- $1.28m for R&D

So basically its an expensive piece of kit that people like Bill Gates would only be able to afford

I think the price is about $1m too expensive. I dont think it would have cost many millions for R&D. Byt anyhoo, all prices are based fundamentally on what the consumer is willing to pay.

Its not targetted at you, so you dont count as a potential consumer.
