According to the BBC, less than 50% of Brits accept evolution, and 40% believe ID should be taught in science classes.

hah! Take that for making fun of Kansas. Your whole country is kooky!

1. The UK has a habit of copying things that happens in the US.
2. Opinion polls can be bogus.

Those stats aren't mutually exclusive. You can want both as part of the curriculum.

Anyway, moronity is getting closer and closer.

Ah right.

Behold the Scientific Dark Age!

Haha, we are crazy.

But I believe it's a nice mix, in a very relative sense.

Evolution, I believe in. Even though I'm christian, it just makes sense.
I do believe that God created life, and what at the time, was Man, or would become, Man.
Intelligent Design, sorta - I believe that through our own ever growing intelligence, we learned to do things different ways, which sparks evolution. So, I don't believe in the intelligent design they mention, but another form.

I'd gather most brits picked it because it had the word "intelligent" in, and so they thought it would make them sound smart.

God I hate chavs.

sorry, moronity is NEARLY upon us? It's already here!

...damn. I'm gonna declare myself my own country so I don't have to be in the same country as a load of kansas-following-freaks. heh.

It's not on this side of the North Sea yet, although the (Christian Democrat) education minister did say something in favour of it, and got flamed pretty badly for that. But then again, the ministery of education has been a hideout for morons for decades, with almost every minister wanting to introduce some grand new plan to destroy our fine public school system.

I would like to see the poll tho, I think its suspicious cos I can only think of one person- out of at least 100 at university that believes in creationism and nobody around where I live- Ockham's razor rules in my opinion.

Thats wonderful but the poll was for ID not creationism. Not the same thing.

depends who you ask.

At its core, you're right, ID is not supposed to be creationism. Alot of people don't see the difference. I'm one of those people, but so are some proponents. The judge that presided over one of the ID cases asked all the different school board members what they definition of ID was. It was different for everyone...one of them considered it the same as creationism.

Anyway, just thought I'd interject that. Carry on.

but the poll was for both actually. Read it and you'll see that it includes three theories (well that's using the term loosely), evolution, ID and creationism Anyway I couldn't think of anyone that believes in ID and technically if no-one can actually define ID how can they teach it if everyone has a differing opinion on what it actually means. Occams Razor rips this to shreds as it is a complicated notion that seems to have been made politically as an argument for the former creationists who have given slight ground against evolution but insist that we are "above the animals" and evolution is fair more simplistic and fits the facts (and in the use of Occam's Razors rules, right). Its 19th Century thinking and it just shows the arrogance of the human race (I've been doing history and theory module in archaeology and the thinking closely mirrors what they say apart from there is no racism, yet).

Apart from this the article also says that it was done by horizon. Now a few years ago, Horizon was a respectable science program, now with the shock horror things it tries it is losing credibility so forgive me if I'm sceptical but I don't think we should particularly trust the poll as we've got no particular referencing to it so it could have been done by a fundamentalist Christian group for all we know.
I'm still not particular convinced.

[EDIT]
Actually I did another look and found that Ipsos MORI as the firm that did it, however, there are some problems, one I can't find anything about them researching this. Go on their site and type in Intelligent Design on their research bar and it comes up with nothing, I would like to see however, if someone can find it one their site. Secondly they used 2000 people- excuse me but that's what, 0.000 003 % of the population. Hell of a small percentage plus it doesn't say who took part or anything. Sorry I think the research is a dud.

ID states that a "intelligent being" created, among other things, life. "Intelligent being" means anything from God to aliens with no mention of the bible or adam and eve, for example.

Creationism is the belief that the universe was created exactly as it states in the bible. That god created adam and eve, etc.

With ID, evolution is still possible and likely. With creationism, evolution is not a possiblity.

ID is possible, but compared to darwinianism, its not probable.

With both you and Mole's posts we can see exactly why judge could see the problems. Also it means that if this can't be testable why should it be included in science?
But the main theme is something that God (to the christians) created us, through perhaps evolution. This is very very similar to creationism and is perhaps the new stance that believers are taking because they need to adapt.
