New source of global warming gas found: plants
lol, yea. You know, for me, this just REALLY makes the "global warming" thing less serious and more of a joke.
 | | | | Quote: LONDON (Reuters) - German scientists have discovered a new source of methane, a greenhouse gas that is second only to carbon dioxide in its impact on climate change. ADVERTISEMENT
The culprits are plants.
They produce about 10 to 30 percent of the annual methane found in the atmosphere, according to researchers at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany.
The scientists measured the amount of methane released by plants in controlled experiments. They found it increases with rising temperatures and exposure to sunlight.
"Significant methane emissions from both intact plants and detached leaves were observed ... in the laboratory and in the field," Dr Frank Keppler and his team said in a report in the journal Nature.
Methane, which is produced by city rubbish dumps, coal mining, flatulent animals, rice cultivation and peat bogs, is one of the most potent greenhouse gases in terms of its ability to trap heat.
Concentrations of the gas in the atmosphere have almost tripled in the last 150 years. About 600 million tonnes worldwide are produced annually.
The scientists said their finding is important for understanding the link between global warming and a rise in greenhouse gases.
It could also have implications for the Kyoto Protocol, which calls for developed countries to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12.
Keppler and his colleagues discovered that living plants emit 10 to 100 times more methane than dead plants.
Scientists had previously thought that plants could only emit methane in the absence of oxygen.
David Lowe, of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand, said the findings are startling and controversial.
"Keppler and colleagues' finding helps to account for observations from space of incredibly large plumes of methane above tropical forests," he said in a commentary on the research.
But the study also poses questions, such as how such a potentially large source of methane could have been overlooked and how plants produced it.
"There will be a lively scramble among researchers for the answers to these and other questions," Lowe added. | | | | |

So? Just because there are sources of greenhouse gasses that we can't reduce means we don't have to do anything about those we can reduce?
Or maybe with an example: "Hey people die from natural causes al day and we can't do anything about that, so it would be rediculous to put effort into stopping that serial killer."
Or maybe closer to your imagination: "Hey we can't invade all countries with dangerous dictators to bring democracy so we shouldn't have invaded Iraq either?

Fair point- it doesn't excuse the efforts we can provide, plus I'm sure we can find ways of harvesting it for biomass.

But to what extent is it true that out efforts will be proportionally futile?

Define futile, is 10% less greenhouse gasses not enough?

Considering the whole earth. What also must be looked at is whether or not the earth has a mechanism to try and sort out natural sources of greenhouse gases and whether or not our overuse of the things may have strained this. Bah, I want another Ice Age we're due

I heard somewhere that places getting colder are actually syptoms of global warming. Probably because of the icecaps melting or something.

Extremities of weather could actually be a sign of global warming.

... In my book "cold" weather means...its cold. SO when the earth gets warmer it gets colder to?
Im confused now. So, extreme cold weather means that the earth is getting warmer?
Right....
So I googled and found a website claim this purposterous data
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0130-11.htm
The title says
How Global Warming May Cause the Next Ice Age
ok so let me highlight the end of this sentence "Next Ice Age".
Next Ice Age means we have had one before, which everyone knows we did. My prehistoric history may be a little shady but correct me if Im wrong. I dont recalled hearing about SUV's and Mastodons roaming the earth at the same time. So, if the earth already has went through this song and dance called "Ice Age" thats caused by global warming, BEFORE MAN AND MACHINES, then.... how did the earth have a Ice age? Did the earth experience global warming pre-man because all the dinosaurs where farting too much?

Sure it was.
Statistically, if the earth can go into an ice age through global warming by itself without mans help and its done it before then it could probably do it again, by itself.

Yes but we are enducing the next one if so. And if you think about it, the warmer it gets due to the sun, its likely that in some parts of the world it will get colder, perhaps. Anyway think about the side effects of acid rain- that is definitely not methane

What I meant is that one cold winter doesn't mean the world isn't getting warmer in the long run.
And yeah, we'll prolly get another Ice Age once. Untill that time, I'd rather not have to move to Switzerland to keep dry feet. Maybe we should store greenhouse gasses in empty gas fields so we can bring them out once that new Ice Age gets started, so we can avert that too.
Anyway, global warming is real. The only "scientists" that disagree with that, are on your administartion's payroll.
