Post subject: | Contrasting idea to globalisation |
Okay were all getting in a big huffy and excitement over globalisation, but is it really the way to go. If you remember some time back, i started a discussion on globalisation and it being the best thing since cliced bread. Well, i think it still is, but im exploring too. Think of the ancient greek political structure. If you notice, there wasnt really one at all. It was all city-states (cities governed themselves entirely, but recognised that they were dependant upon eachother for commerce). Well, do you think such a thing could be possible and sustainable within the modern world? Think about it. Instead of globalisation (total centralisation) you get the city states (total decentralisation). Right now youre living in a city right? if not youre living in a village which probably belongs to a city-like province. Rural areas have districs that effectively belong to nearby cities. So then, in your city is a mayor right? Well, he is the prime minister! Elected by the people. How you may say? Well, you remmeber ancient athens and the direct democracy? Well, thats what will happen. Direct democracy can never work in a centralised world because no one gives a shit. BUT...if you were making decisions for you town, village, street you will surely give a shit! The collection of city states forms as a league of states, not a nation, because there is independence. This league has a constitution and a few basic rules to which all city states must adhere to (like, 'you cant bomb us'). They sign up to this when they want to join and if they break the rules, they are expelled from the league and no longer fall under its benefits. Changes to the constitution are made by only a stupidly high majority of the entire collection of city states. If one state is dependant on the supply of resources of another, then they can trade. If they cant trade, then tough shit. Migration is encouraged. The league is reposonsible for recruiting what little armed forces are needed. Decisions on defense policy are made by the league of city states too. Theres lots more but its 0320 now and my eyes are starting to bleed. Last thing. Perhaps this is only possible AFTER globalisation. Yes after! Think about it, with a super large collective government, we will notice that essentially we dont need a central government anymore because we are the only nation. One nation has nothing to compete against on its own. It will break up (on consensus, not crisis) and cities settle into independence. Perhaps the level of cultural neutrality that is required is proof enough that we will never survive on this earth long enough to see it happen. (we as in HUMANS!!! not, us few!) ![]() |

Yes I like the image of globalisation but there are slight probs. Mainly that the US would want to be in charge, everyone else will refuse due to their idea for independance and everyone will accuse it of being corrupt (see the EU). Tho what would be important is recognising that each state will have to become equal to each other. I'm not sure whether people would like that. |

The US has nothing to do with globalisation. Globalisation consists of a total centralised government.
did you not READ my post? Im talking about the city-state NOT GLOBALISATION!! ![]() ![]() |

I did. But the thing some people might still think they are better than other city states. And the US thing was a joke but if you get my drift... ![]() |

This would only happen AFTER a total neutralisation of cultural conflicts and ideas of superiority. So the problem will already be gone. |

So it'll happen never. You can neutralise cultural conflicts without neutralising culture, and there's no way that's going ot happen in the forseeable future. Not without an iron fist govt to crush the will from the people. |

I agree with Satis here. You'll have to change a lot in people's mind to work. Its not really achieveable |

I agree in a diluted kind of way. I agree that people have to change ALOT, but i dont like Myrddins choice of words ("You'll have to change people alot"). Only the people can effectively change their own minds. Also, i dont like to rule it out as impossibe. I acknowledge that there is atleast some kind of chance. |

Yeah choice of words isn't particular good but imagine tho. You've got a lot of people with differing ideas on how to run things which is likely to cause clashes with your idea. I think it would be extremely very hard to convert people to one particular ideology like that. Even religions haven't worked that well. |

I think about the only way to do it is to crush the will from the people. Either kill EVERYONE of differing ideology (history has shown that to be wasted effort...you never get them all...kinda like Pokemon) or figure out a way to crush their free will. Maybe with drugs in the water supply and a 1984-like secret police we could accomplish the latter.... ...but I don't really want to live in that world. Being a dissenter is a good thing. |

I dont speak or read Japanese so I dont understand what that says. I dont understand alot of things that are japanese which is why I dont live there. And since I dont live there or understand things japanese why would I fall under the same laws, rules, and regulations as them? |
