Wouldn't it be great if a 'peoples political forum' exists? https://forums.plasmasky.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1536 |

In the sense that its run by the government. Every citizen is a forum member of their local area and talks about anything political to other citizens and political representatives? Think of the epic volume of government policy scrutinisation. Issues of vast popular consensus can the be actually proposed from the bottom up. We would have answers from politicians about dodgy foreign policy. |

O.o Ever been to a PTA meeting? It's all about self-important losers taking 30 minutes to talk about something noone else gives a shit about. I think that most people are so mediocre in their intelligence that any forums like this would be dominated by inanity and stupidity. Some dumb bitch would stand up and cry for 30 minutes about how television is destroying her children, her friends will second her, and then it'll take 3 hours of people calling her a stupid whore before the agenda can be moved forward. To how video games are destroying kids. Maybe I'm just cynical. |

That wont happen because if no one gives a shit about the agenda, then the topic will just sink. Think of it being just like this forum with just 2 differences. 1. It has a few political representatives as members. 2. Major spontaneous issues that the vast majority agree on are considered for political proposition. See it as the only real achieveable interface between the poeple and government. |

Would that be good? Normal people don't give a fuck about it, but moronic pressure groups certainly will. So either we're stuck with laws we don't want, or the forum has no power, in wich case it's just a waste of time. |

It boils down to that then? That the general population are morons. |

heh...ok, so we agree that people are stupid. :p btw, the forums you're talking about kind of exist. Local government is a small group of elected officials that represent the populace. Then it scales up....town government to county government to state government to federal government. Governments get even smaller than that...school councils, neighbrhood councils, etc etc. So what you're suggesting kind of already exists (at least in the US)... and, mainly, is ineffectual, loaded down with stupidity and busy-bodies, and generally ignored by people with intelligence. ![]() |

So theoritically a nice idea apart from one flaw, the people. Its a possibilty tho to try and create an Athenian type democracy. |

Really, the first democracy that came up with the founding principles of todays democracies and was able to change their mind to prevent a genocide. |

Athenian democracy is nice, but it doesn't scale up. Don't forget that only a small part of the population was allowed to vote. Only free men whose families had been living in Athens for a few generatiosn were allowed to vote. |

You'll have to read Wikipedia to find out, but it's a long article and I'm not going to read it. |
