large amounts of water on mars
A recent probing (*cough*) of Mars has discovered what's probably large amounts of ice and possible liquid water underground on Mars.

I find it amazing....50 years ago sci fi writers were waxing romantic about a Mars that used to be green and beatiful but had all its canals dried out and everything dead.
20 years ago we laughed at it and said there was never any life there. Never any water. and the canals were probably wind erosion or something.
For the last few years, we've been finding that the sci fi writers were right. I have no doubt that eventually we'll find the remains of life on Mars. Quite possibly still some really basic life.

Interesting, science was wrong? You dont say...
So science said there is no way (X) could exisit. Yet, it does...

lol, bastard. Scientifically we proved there was no water on Mars. Then scientifically we proved there was. That's the whole scientific theory thing at work.

Could still turn out to be nothing though.

So no no wait let me have my moment.
How could science scientificlly prove there was or wasnt any water on mars until they sent a probe to actually find out?
So technically their "best guess" was Mars did not have water. Or as you put it, their "theory".
Only goes to show, there are A LOT of things in life that science doesnt know yet exisit, and water on Mars is one of them.
Thank you
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Yes water on Mars is very interesting topic. What I really wish they would be researching is Cydonia.

Science doesn't prove everything. Its likely that the theory was inconclusive and not enough research has been done into it. Basically it could have even been bad science.

Scientific theory has a basis of scientific evidence.

Yes but what must be remembered is that there are factors not taken into consideration because they are not present or because the person has ignored them.

Or simply because they're not known. Only with the latest technology they've been able to find that water, so how are scientists supposed to have known that?

right...basically previously, they used all their abilities to look for water...ie, optical observation, radar, infrared, etc...and found no water on the surface of Mars.
Using a new technique (sorta new), they actually used radar to look under ground, and found huge amounts of water underneath the outside of Mars.
So, they saw no water on Mars, and assumed there was no water in Mars...a fairly safe assumption. Since then science has allowed a closer look, and they found they were wrong.
Blah...jesus. Anyway, Cydonia. The face? Who knows if they'll find anything interesting. And if they do, what's the chance of us lowly unimportant humans finding out. Sure would be hip, though...find a crashed alien spaceship or something. heheh

Cydonia, the "theory" is that around the area where they found the face is a city. A city with pyramids in and around it. The city is under ice and on top of the ice is dust and dirt. Ill see if I cant find some pictures.

And what basis of scientific evidence supports this 'theory'?

the only thing science ever proves, is its own theories wrong. My science teachers taught me that. By learning whats wrong, you narrow down whats right
anyhoo that's cool. didnt we already know there were shallow channels that we thought were dried-up streams on mars?

If their was evidence then it wouldnt be a theory anymore now would it? After all proof of something is in the evidence. I mean, given the Mars situation, if their was evidence that Mars had water then why would they need a theory that it has water?
But since I am a mind reader I know you mean "what is the basis for this theory?"

That sounds perfectly true.
