This is a Risk! game built against GoogleMaps using the googlemaps api. I thought it was damned cool. Still under alot of construction or whatever, but neato regardless. Probably pointless to anyone that's never played Risk.

Played Risk years ago. Hated it because you rely on the die. Rather than tactics.

There is strategy to risk. Besides, the dice represent the random chance that is inherent in anything. It takes skill to estimate what your chances are and to make judgements about what you are willing to risk.

Derf, you blasphemer! Risk ownz j00! I said it before and I'll say it again, it's the only boardgame I've ever seen anyone punch their opponent in the face for. Risk for the win.

Its a bit like Poker, sure its all about calculating risk and taking chances, but ultimately, you never have control. I dont like this.

I prefer Monopoly big style. Used to put money into it with my brothers and play until 6am. I had many glorious victories.

I don't think Monopoly has any less chance than Risk. Risk it's all about fortifying, bringing appropriately sized armies to bear, deciding on whether or not to run rampant through an enemy's rear (not that kind of rear, Pig), whether to trust someone you've allied with, etc. I don't see it being any less of a thinking game than Monopoly.

Of course, I think they're all a bit short-sighted compared with reality. Computer games are much better, or at least can be. That's why I loved Rome:Total War so much. You made your own fortunes in a (roughly) realistic manner.

The shifting alliances of Risk are the best part. Like when you ally with another player to take on a stronger player...do you leave your borders relatively unguarded in order to pull more troops to the front against your common enemy, or do you fear your "ally" might stab you in the back as soon as he has the chance? Those are the decisions that make the game what it is. :)

Or the fact that your ally is really the player you have to destroy...all those schemes.

Risk is glorious. What about the times everyone bundles their strength against one player who looks to be winning the game? That's great fun. Just like in reality, it's often best not to draw too much attention on yourself in Risk, by desperately going for the whole of Asia for example.

Lay off Asia btw - it's undefendable. Europe sucks too. Best bets are Oz, S- and N-America. Africa is a knife that cuts on both sides.

Heh...Risk online sounds ok, but it's no substitution for the real-life deals and negotiating that take place. Much like the negotatiating round in monopoly (which is great fun), but risk is non-stop.
