oh no, please do. He deserves it. :P

I thinking voting for governmental leaders has degenerated. Used to be you voted for the best candidate. Nowadays you just vote against the worst.

not to keep resurrecting this, but apparently Candoleeza Rice wrote a letter to the president of the EU stressing the US's insistence on continued control of the internet. That letter was recently posted online. Apparently this was one of the main reasons the EU didn't make a big deal about the change of internet control

[quote]To:

The Right Honourable Jack Straw MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, London

Dear Foreign Secretary,

The governance structure and continued stability and sustainability of the Internet are of paramount importance to the United States. The Internet has become an essential infrastructure for global communications, including for global trade and commerce, and therefore we firmly believe that support for the present structures for Internet governance is vital. These structures have proven to be a reliable foundation for the robust growth of the Internet we have seen over the course of the last decade.

As we approach the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), we should underscore the vast potential of the Internet for global economic expansion, poverty alleviation, and for improving health, education and other public services, particularly in the developing world where Internet access remain unacceptably low.

The Internet will reach its full potential as a medium and facilitator for global economic expansion and development in an environment free from burdensome intergovernmental oversight and control. The success of the Internet lies in its inherently decentralized nature, with the most significant growth taking place at the outer edges of the network through innovative new applications and services. Burdensome, bureaucratic oversight is out of place in an Internet structure that has worked so well for many around the globe. We regret the recent positions on Internet governance(i.e., the “new cooperation modelâ€

So in summary the US stated that the only reason that they want control of the internet is that it prevents other governments gaining control of it and keeps the internet out of being interfered with. That's alright theoritically speaking as it pretty much states what quite a few people have said but the problem is the US shouldn't have that much influence if unsruplous companies can use US laws to screw other countries by applying them. I think what might be needed is the opportunity for some people to discuss how the US can make it so the internet is perhaps looked after by them but at the same time make it impossible for the US to manipulate the internet to its own purpose and be able to ensure that the businesses that use the internet to sell things in another country e.g. an US business selling things in France, has to abide by French laws. However, although there might be problems with this (totalitarian regimes for example) what might be best is stating that businesses have to abide by the financial code/laws in the country they trade in.
