I just don't see why any of the two parties involved is making a big deal about this anyway. I mean, with what Satis just pointed out, it's clear that this more of an abstract matter than anything else. Principal if you will.
Why bother if things stay the same either way?

if it stay in our control, nothing changes, and we're all happy (except the whiners).
If control passes elsewhere, many bad things can happen. The problem is with DNS...that's what translates domain names (like Clankiller.com) into IP addresses, which is what we really run the internet off of.
Imagine this. China has a big vote on the internet, since it has 3 billion users. It decides to tack a little thing on the end of a DNS RFC that says the following....
If someone tries to bring up a url with *freedom* in it, and the originating IP addresses puts it inside China, forward the ip, date, time and everything else relevant to the appropriate Chinese authority.
From then on, automatically if someone in China goes to a website with 'freedom' in the URL, they have secret police knocking on their door within an hour. Or less.
That's the kind of thing that can happen when stupid people get put in charge of DNS. I guess you guys don't remember SiteFinder, right? Do a search on it to see how DNS was abused by a corporation. Imagine what a fascist government could do.

Devil's advocate here: but who's to say the US doesn't become a facist state? Especially the 'freedom' example sounds familiar.
I thought they only had rice and laundries in China, tbh. No internet. Maybe they have internet laundries now. 'Happy Shiny Lucky Internet Laundry Rice Bar!! Free entry tourists!"

1. Rascist bastard.
2. Ok, the US becomes a fascist state. We still created the damn thing. China didn't have a hand in any part of it, but now wants to run it.
Ownership, fools. We own it. You can't have it. You can't make me give it to you, because we have nukes.
Jeez...I think I'm about done with this conversation. Does noone believe in ownership any more? I'm not inviting any of you fuckers over to my house, because you're the kinda of people that pick up shit and put it in your pocket.

A lot of people got irritated in this thread, hehe. Ah well.
And Satis, ownership only exists if it concerns my own property. But luckily for the world, I'm anything but greedy...all I need is to have fun (usually have, life's a party) and eat & sleep properly.
Imagine someone with my ethics that's a greedy bastard.

Yes, this thread should die. If anyone's opinion hasn't been altered already, it's not going to be.

just as an update (not to resurrect flames), the debate is over. America continues to control the internet.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/1 ... index.html
There's an oversight commitee that can make recommendations or whatever, but its decisions are nonbinding, so...basically...worthless.
As some may be able to guess, I'm quite happy about this result.

Hav a look on the poll on who should control the web. 43% think an international body, 25% private, 24% is a non-profit group and 9% believe a goverment agency.

Yeah wasn't that what the American government claims to be.
"It would be a hell of a lot easier if this was a dictatorship as long as I was dictator"- George W Bush. I've got a Bushisms poster!

hehe...have a shot at this game: land brains in Bush' skull..every time you succeed, you get a (real) bushism. It's really ABSURD what a guy in his position is saying all the time. i mean, once or twice ok, but the amount of mistakes he makes make him look so much like a retard that i'm not completely surprised at the image some ppl have of the US; that they'd re-elect such a moron.
