hm, ok, didn't know about the Pirates of the Caribbean being Disney. Then again, I didn't like it all that much. The Alice in Wonderland I think's been mentioned, but yea, it should be pretty cool.

Hey Derf, did I mention I saw The Thing (the 80's remake) a while ago too? What a movie. Kurt Russell is the man, almost as cool as in Escape from LA.

Hehe, you may worship KR but i've never seen him in any amazingly spunktastic films.

I think KR is very good actor, Snake is the best of course but then theres that soldier movie where he and his team are obsolete and replaced and then dumped on a junk planet. Then theres Tango&Cash, hell even the movie where he and one of the Baldwin brothers play firemen is totally watchable. Also he starred in the first Stargate movie which was pretty ok, i mean it did spawn a TV series that ran like 1 day less than forever.

All in all i would say he has made some good choices and some bad ones, defenately above average.

Yea, most of his films are of middling quality. That soldier movie is surprisingly good, though. I once caught it by accident and was like..whoa.

Nothing wrong with B movies. In a strange way, the fact that they aren't AAA movies helps to enjoy them, ie cheesy lines, crazy plotholes and insane fighting sequences don't ruin the fun.

That blind swordsman movie with Rutger Hauer is a pretty good example. He tears through an entire army of mobsters armed with machine guns and whatnot. He's BLIND. With a SWORD. It's awesome.

That movie reminds me of Zatoichi. A must see for people into martial arts films and a good film in general.

I saw Inglourious Basterds yesterday, Tarantino's latest. Loved it.

It has some slow moments, especially in the first half, but some scenes were just...wow. And the finale is magnificent.

You gotta go see it for yourselves. It's cinema for the love of it, with a flair for pastische and absurdity. Very enjoyable. Oh and the actor playing Landa is brilliant.

Just go watch it and we'll talk spoilers.

Well, i've just seen Inglorious Basterds and it was pretty shit. I went in expecting little which is what I got. A extremely generous 2 out of 5 for me. No, infact, i won't be seduced by the big name actors, I'll give it a 1 out of 5.

Throughout the film my brain was never really in sync with the numbingly slow pace. I was seriously under-stimulated for the whole stretch and there was never really a moment that was clever or emotive.

I suppose some enjoyment came out of admiring the 2 chicks in elegant attire. Very pretty girls. I think the Hansa "Jew Hunter" guy was amazing. Scored massively in my books, easily the attraction of the movie for me. His character was slightly patchy but the execution was grand. The scene at the start in the French countryside was rather good too, before the nazis came in and shot the place up.

The plot itself was pretty shite and felt on-par with Snakes on a Plane in terms of artistic ambition. Each of the characters were under developed so there was no real sympathy if any one of them died. The Zeller "sniper" dude should have died a "good guy" so that the audience would have had a chance to decide for themselves if overall he was a goody or a baddie, kind of a moral dilemma. But no, it was decided that the audience should be shovel-fed one more killing.

It was missing a great deal of logic too. At least 2 distinct Kill Bill tracks were clearly recycled along with modern music which felt totally out of place.

It's as if the film was attempted as a silly-comedy, without the comedy. Perhaps it was made for an American audience since it seemed to emphasise on stereotypes that were last recorded and laughed at by everyone else decades ago. Such as the eccentric campness of the German or the subtle cheek of the Brit.

It's like farting in the bath tub. It's only funny if you're a kid, or a moron. Not clever and not funny.

Honestly, I think you're judging it unfairly. Yes, there was a lot of logic lacking there (like the girl suddenly owning a cinema, for no apparent reason), but that was not the point of the movie. Everything is just a vehicle to forward the outrageous story, which in itself is an ode and a pastiche at te same time of WWII movies of all sorts, spiced up with tons of references and nods.

Every important character is a complete caricature and over-the-top representation of the stock WWII characters of the grizzly American Sarge (Pitt), the crafty and amoral German (Jew Hunter), the cold killer (Stiglitz), the slick British undercover agent (forgot his name)...they all are either blown completely out of proportion or made ridiculous. The only character who looks 'normal' and you start growing some sympathy for when he shows a disgust for his war deeds is the young German war hero, who then, so very far towards the end of the movie, turns out to be a major a-hole indeed.

If you look at it as a normal WWII movie, it doesn't make any sense. But as an abstract excercise in playing with movie clichés while having a lot of fun and showing some remarkable talent for dialogue (the entire bar scene) and cinematography (the inferno at the cinema), it is completely awesome.

I'm not reading your reviews, as I plan on watching the movie shortly. However, the movie did get some pretty good reviews elsewhere, so I'm wondering if Derf's jadism is leaking into things other than games. Anyway, once I watch it I'll post back. I still think you're on crack, Derf.

Well, what's the point in making an outrageous AND illogical film? Isn't that exactly like the writer filming himself farting in the bath tub? Isn't anyone eventually capable of making outrageous films? Is it therefore not depreciative to do something anyone is capable of? I mean, it's not as if you have to pay attention to any particular line of thought, so it's exactly like having a massive brain fart on film. Tarantino's inflated ego by any chance?

Kill Bill was outrageous but logical and therefore a far better film.

Yes, there were a few dialogue scenes that were good, two that I can think of. One was, as you say the bar scene. It was gripping, but in the end resulted in a shootout.... Kind of like baking some fine dessert and then throwing it out of the window just to see it splatter. Wasted.

But the rest was, as I say, broken. E.g. Was it really necessary in all of the countless interrogation scenes that the two parties constantly asked each other to elaborate? Was it for the benefit of a retarded audience?
