Is there a virus on the run that blocks image files. For some reason i cant view pictures anymore, same with ctrl alt del, i cant see some of the comics.

I'm not familiar with either of those... I need to look that up when I'm not at work.

regarding your images Peltz... maybe. GFree ran into a freaky virus that replaced specifically-named images with ads. Whatever it is sounds like a big problem regardless, unless you have really high packet loss on your network.

Satis, since you had Latin at high school, did you also have (old) Greek? Here in the Netherlands schools that teach Latin also teach Greek for two years, after which you can choose one of the two. Cyrillic isn't all that different from the Greek alphabet, and I have little difficulty de deciphering the letters (figuring out the words is a different matter off course).

Today, my net connection went down. Don't know why. Checked everything. Started with a reboot of the router. Didn't work - thought stuff it, must be the ISP, I'll try later.

An hour or two ticks by - still nadda. Slightly confused (As I've not had any real connection issues with this ISP before) I start with the basics. Check the physical connections. Yep. All good. Ok. Check all my settings are still correct. Yep, spot on. What can it be?

I call up the ISP - I'm on the phone the guy on the other end tells me my router isn't reporting any disconnects, but he can see the reboot. I haven't been able to reconnect since the reboot, but oddly whilst I'm on the phone to him, google loads! Great! The guy says call back WITHOUT rebooting if it happens again so he can see more statistics.

Connection drops shortly afterwards (5 mins?) so I start the call again (expecting to queue. In the mean time I fire up MSN so that I can try to run the diagnostics - DNS failure.
Fire up Xbox 360, Run the Network Tests - DNS failure. I check my DNS settings - they're fine.

Call up ISP, and from here on, I paraphrase (as accurately as I can)

Me: Hi, I've lost connectivity to the internet, Just wondering if you could check for any line faults etc.
Tech: *Takes details of account* I can't see any problems - the router doesn't show any disconnects and I can ping you fine.
Me: But web pages won't load. I've tripple checked my settings.
Tech: But everything is fine
Me: Regardless of if everything is fine or not, I can not access web pages, my 360 won't connect to Xbox live and neither will my flatmates PC.
Tech: But everything is fine.

This goes on for several minutes. The techy always comes back with 'but everything is fine'. So I try a new approach.

Me: Ok, I'm running a diagnostic on my connection. It fails at DNS. The same on my 360.
Tech: You're running a diagnostic?
Me: Yes. And it fails at DNS.
Tech: And where are you seeing this?
Me: I am 'seeing' this on my Xbox 360 and on the in built WLM Diagnostic test on any windows XP machine.
Tech: Oh. But your DNS is fine I can see that from here.

*sigh*

Me: How about if I change my DNS to automatically be obtained?

No answer. Silence.

Me: How about if I change my DNS to automatically be obtained?
Tech: Which DNS settings have you got at the moment?
Me: The ones you guys gave me when I set up my connection.
Tech: Oh, that should be automatic.

*sigh*

Run diagnostics again
Me: It still fails at DNS
Tech: But everything is fine.
Not wanting to get in to this again, I change my question.
Me: Ok, let me rephrase - I can't see web pages and my DNS tests fail. Why?
Tech: Try changing the DNS to *insert DNS here* and *insert DNS2 here*
Me: Great, that's worked thanks.

THEN the prick lectures me on how I should use their supported firmware versions on the router - despite the fact they're well out of date!
