Yeah, bugs don't count as "giving up" for me. Well the major ones anyway.
Did you really hate Dead Space that much? I still have it on my shelf but I'm only gonna play it once I can be sure that I can turn up the sound, turn off the lights and scare the living shit outta myself.
But then, I'm a survival horror whore. I want the thrill.

are there like any decent first person crime scene investigation games? like really really atmospheric? i remember using the flashlight in doom3 thinking it would make an awesome game.

You should give Condemned a spin. It's "investigating" aspect is a little slim compared to CSI but still worth it, and the action is visceral and it's fucking scary. It gave me one of the biggest scares of my life...not gonna tell you what, you should play it.
Should be really cheap by now.

You're welcome. And while the investigative parts are fairly relaxed, the game is to a large extent about walking around in scary places (abandoned school, derelict mall, etc), or running in fear and/or sometimes fighting using 2X4's, concrete rebars, fire axes and the occasional gun. So don't think the game is all like this, wouldn't want you to be deceived by that.
It's an ace game whichever way you look at it though.

I'm looking forward to the next Alien vs Predator game. I'm hoping they do it justice... the first was AWESOME.... the second was a mixed bag of awesome and crappy. However, playing as a marine in that game can be freakish... hearing aliens skittering about in the dark, trying to avoid face huggers.
As for dead space... I didn't get very far. I was pretty bored, then got stuck at some puzzle or other and was like, screw it.

Back in 98' when I was in the Army living in the barracks with my awesome 56k modem I used to play the crap out of this game: Aliens Online by Mythic. It was so awesome. It was a progressive FPS so it kept stats. Basiclly you could play a marine or alien in different maps. If there was nobody online you could play a Marine and all the aliens where NPC but as people joined the game as aliens control of that NPC would be handed to the player. As an alien you could be a facehugger or a drone. So many hours of fun.

that looks pretty damned awesome. I wouldn't pay a monthly fee for that, but something like that would be freakin' awesome. I'd play the hell out of it.

Wow, susprised at the level of graphics. That does look rather interesting. I never really heard of it, which kind of surprises me, seeing as I was free to play anything in 98' while you guys were spending time sleeping in halls with loads of other men (sausagefest!). JK

just for the record, there were women in my military units. Just not very many, and most were pretty manly.

Yeah, but they didn't sleep in the same barracks and shower with you guys right? I mean I could be wrong - echoes of Starship Troopers flashing in my mind.

Same barracks, yes. Same rooms, no. Same showers, no. Same tents in the field, yes (but they were platoon tents, not 2-person tents).

Did anyone ever fool around in the field tents (male-female I mean)? Or did you ever hear rumours about gay action in your platoon? I have no idea how big a platoon is and am too lazy to google it, but I'll assume it's big enough for off-hand gay rumours.

around 50 people in a platoon. Gay action - no, though some peeps were definitely gay. Male on female action... yea, probably. But nothing concrete. No one getting court martialed for it that I know of.
But man, after two weeks of sleeping in a tent, you tend to get a little wound up, let me tell you. Wandering off into the desert for a couple minutes alone with a bush just looks better and better.
