oh yea...basically pay full price for a movie with significantly reduced quality. Good idea Sony. Just like that idea to sell full-length songs to people on their cell phones for $5 per song. Pardon? $5/song? Can't I get them for $1/song elsewhere?

yep...either you're stupid or you have so much money you don't care. Or it's not your money.

Who has, pays. Who does not, seeks.
If I were earning much enough, I probably would not care if I get song for $1 or $10 but if I get it in half an hour or in a minute.

But if you know how (and yes - only dumb don't know a single way), let not waste the money.

Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I guess this is a continuation.

Basically, HD-DVD got killed by Sony about 6 months ago, but Blue-Ray still isn't going anywhere. In fact, its market share is dropping. My hope that Blue Ray would die (and hopefully at least partially eat Sony's hubris) appears to be coming true.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/21/ni ... -septembe/

The economy probably has something to do with that. However, it's definitely looking like the format may be flopping. The fact that prices never went down, even after HD-DVD died, is probably working against them as well. Serves them right as well... I'm certain that Sony had hoped they would turn Blue Ray into a cash cow that they controlled the prices of. Boo yah! Eat it Sony, eat it!

/me still will boycott any Sony product because the company is a bunch of bastards.

mwahaha serves the bastards right. Can you believe the retards actually want to release another new ps2? AND a new ps3 AND a new psp.

Guess what. The ps3 only has a bigger HDD (yet again, 4th machine running) and the psp basically has a brighter screen. yay, there's so much frigging point in that...

My bro wanted to buy a PS3 at first...i was like "erh...I dunno...it's like a 100 euros more expensive, and you might want to check what games you can get for it too, first". After an hour in a couple of stores, he let go of the idea of a PS3.

The HDD is overrated anyway, unless you download all the shit possible from the net. If you use it to play games then it only takes a fraction of the available space.

The one thing the PS3 has going for it is the blue ray drive. As you may be aware, Sony keeps changing stuff about the blue ray format, so people that got an older player may no longer be able to play modern movies. Yea, great marketing move there Sony! But the PS3 was pretty much a safe bet for a forward-compatible blueray player.

But Blueray is going to die. Yay! Maybe now we'll get a next-gen hi-def format without freakin' DRM!

Blu-ray is too early and too pointless. Like voodoo had sli technology back in the old days.

What exactly makes Blu-ray so 'great' anyway? I'm not really up on all these formats tbh, as far as I understand it, it's HD quality but just a (much) bigger disc? So e.g. all the LotR films could be on one disc?

*shrugs*

Anyway yes, you're right, bigger HDD is pointless. Mole has had a 360 20gb from day 1 and never used up all the HDD space; that's after you factor in that 7Gb of that is actually reserved for Live updates/patches/system software etc. Admittedly we now have the 120gb hdd as well on the other 360... but shush!

You only need a ton of hdd space on a console if you're putting films and music on there.

Agree with Peltz that it's all too early. Most people are still upgrading their old video collections to DVD (if bothering at all, I'm not unless I see one of my favourites stupidly cheap, like £1.99) and after just about doing that, no one is gonna start the upgrade all over again just to watch the same old stuff. I sure as hell won't. I don't even notice the difference between normal and HD (though admittedly I'm pretty crap with stuff like that in general ;)) so I certainly don't wanna shell out £20 for something I already own that isn't going to make me go "OMG I'VE BEEN WASTING MY ENTIRE LIFE!"

Blu-Ray is not just about fitting more stuff on a disc, it also allows for higher resolutions for video (off course, to benefit from that, you'll need an HD TV).
I don't think any successor of Blu-Ray will be without DRM. Content providers (mainly Hollywood companies) will only put their junk on a DRM protected medium.

off course

I first thought Arathorn puts it jokingly, to illustrate the point. Now I wonder if it is just bad habit of doubling an 'f'. :P

About the formats, I say it again... no matter what mess of scramble or chimp-reasoned security they do, the signal must show off in its raw form at some point. That's the time to grab it and store it on the HDD in unreduced quality. If you watch it on your screen, you can save i, unless the bastards violate your right to do whatever you want with the hardware you have paid for - for example, if they build an electrified fence around your TV and don't let you approach OR even don't let you touch the disc you just purchased: "we will play it for you, and you stay away from your disc and your TV". It might not be cheap enough for everyone, but out there are geeks who'd rather give up eating than breaking the new toy. And once broken => broken.

The only way to make it very secure is то let people pay, and don't get the disc, but the right to watch. Then, at homes, they just dial up a phone number and have their movie played. This yet should violate the law: why does any chimp have to know when I watched a movie, eh? I forgot the most important part. Any poking the signal you receive shall be observable from the sender. And the poker should get a swat team ruining his apartment upon his blown doings. Now that would be the safe way to distribute the movies.
