Apparently the American maintsteam media is reluctant of of showing these images (only a few of the milder pics here and there are being shown according to a Belgian reporter there), so thankgod for the interweb.
Partly because the pentagon declared that showing these pics too much might incite violence against American troops abroad. But how about they just didn't torture ppl and take pics of it, that would have worked a lot better than not showing those pics.
Anyway, some nasty crap in there. Did you see the vids? Some dudes having to masturbate while being lined up, but most of all the mental guy (who they called "shithead" apparently cos he would rub his body with his own faeces)? They tied him to a jail door in a straight jacket or something, and he started banging his head into the metal door, over and over again. With different camera angles of him doing so, with no on trying to stop him.
Pretty sick shit.

Yeah I saw the paper this morning. WTF is going on. Why are US troops doing this? I mean don't they know or care about the Geneva convention and don't they think that perhaps the only way to do something about Iraq is to not imitate the old regime. Its sick

I think its sick and Im shocked this was allowed to happen. When I was in the Army, the Geneva convention was shoved down our throats every training exercise.
"Geneva convention this"
"Geneva convention that"
"Men we cant do that because of the Geneva convention"
" We can only don this because of the Geneva convention"
Being in the infantry you do alot of training where you take prisoners and you get your ass chewed out if you shoot a unarmed person in training(blank bullets). When taking and handling prisoner higher ranking NCO's where always in charge of the situation.
Im almost certain the troops that abused or allow abuse where told to do so from higher up.

The problem is definetely with the officers in charge. Even if you had a unit of total fuckup soldiers, it's an officer's job to keep his men in line. And with the quantity and quality of torture, it must've been allowed.
So, anyway, yea, it's fucked up. Being air defense artillery, we didn't get the Geneva Convention shoved down our throats so much...except when training on taking prisoners and whatnot, which was infrequent. However, we still knew not to torture people.
btw, it's not just the US troops that are violating the Geneva convention.

It is disgusting. Not watched the vids and I won't, but I've seen the stuff about the british troops. Know what the problem is? Everyone publicly says "booo, what about human rights..." but most people i know secretly are in fact thinking "stupid iraqis deserve it". And guess what, only one guy has apparently been arrested, and that'll only be to prevent the people who want us to pull out from using it as an extra lever in their protest.

I agree with 11b and pev. For the sosphistication of the torture and the fact it was so widespread it meant that higher ups had to have allowed it. Pev's right in that because of the way one side acts, the other side has an almost subliminal urge to hurt the enemy even when they are helpless, in fact even more so. I've said this before but one of the key problems with warfare is that people start to resemble the opposition, for example the fundamentalism on both sides. We should remember the Geneva convention tho because it defines our morality and makes us morally right.
