Post Feds after Google data
Feds after Google data

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/13657303.htm

Quote:
The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a federal judge to order Google to turn over a broad range of material from its closely guarded databases.

The move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child protection law struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to minors. The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches.

Couldnt they just get Google to write a report on it? It would save time, money and make the government more transparent as to wtf theyre actually doing.

Do you expect politicians to do something sensible- sounds like a way of trying to control the net.

I hope google declines and the government gets the smack down in court (again).

It would actually be in Google's best interested to resist, anyway...confidentiality and fighting "the man" is a big part of their appeal...if they knuckle under to uncle Sam and hand out priveleged information, they'll lose their public trust.

oh, reading the article, Google did refuse a subpoena and is fighting the latest attempts. Good for them.

From Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (aka, the bible of quotes for internet geeks with some intellectual background :P )

Quote:
As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

I don't think that's the meaning of that quote. I does look a bit like the current situation though, the west tries to spread democracy in Middle Eastern dictatorships, but at home they trump on civil liberties.
